The short answer
Speak to their GP, or another appropriate healthcare professional, about any new or concerning changes in memory or confusion. CareMap does not offer clinical advice and cannot say what is causing a change.
Alongside that, HSE and recognised dementia support organisations provide information and support services, and the HSE Home Support and carer support routes may also be relevant.
If confusion comes on suddenly
Sudden or rapidly worsening confusion, or an immediate concern for someone's safety, needs prompt professional assessment. Follow the urgent-help guidance on our situation pages and contact the appropriate emergency or out-of-hours service.
Who to contact
- Their GP, about new or concerning memory or confusion changes
- The local HSE Home Support Office, about applying for help at home
- A recognised dementia support organisation, for information, adviser services and family support
- Carer support organisations, for practical and emotional support for the person doing the caring
Practical things families often find useful — CareMap suggestions
These are general practical suggestions from us, not clinical guidance, and what suits one person will not suit another. A healthcare professional or dementia adviser can advise on an individual situation.
- Keeping routines and surroundings familiar where possible
- Written reminders and notes in places the person already looks
- Good lighting, and keeping walking routes clear
- Asking a dementia adviser about day services and local supports
Support for the carer
Respite, day services and carer support organisations exist for the person doing the caring as well as the person being cared for, and there are carer payments and an annual carer support grant to ask about.
Decision-making and legal matters
CareMap does not provide legal advice and does not summarise the law here. For arrangements about supporting someone's decision-making, use the current official guidance from the Decision Support Service, and take your own legal advice.
